Securing the Internet of Things for the Quantum Era

· 14:30 – 15:00 Amsterdam time · Room B (5)

The rapid growth of the IoT has transformed critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, energy, and smart cities. However, IoT security is deeply dependent on public key infrastructures (PKI) for device identity, authentication, certificate management, secure onboarding, key establishment, and firmware validation. The emergence of quantum computing threatens many of the public-key algorithms underpinning today's PKI, creating a long-term security risk for IoT deployments with constrained resources and long operational lifetimes.

This talk focuses on the transition of IoT PKI towards PQC. It examines the implications of PQC for certificates, certificate chains, device provisioning, authentication protocols, secure updates, and lifecycle management at scale. Particular attention is given to the practical challenges of deploying larger post-quantum keys and signatures on constrained IoT devices and bandwidth-limited networks. The talk also covers hybrid certificates, crypto-agile PKI architectures, migration strategies, and interoperability with existing IoT security standards.

Speakers

  • Professor and Research Director · University of Glasgow UK | RISE Sweden

Shahid Raza is the Chair and Full Professor of Cybersecurity and the Director of Research at the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow, UK. Previously, Shahid served as the Director of the Cybersecurity Unit at RISE Sweden for eight (8) years, where he established the unit as one of the largest technical cybersecurity groups in Sweden, conducting cutting-edge research on both fundamental and applied cybersecurity topics. He co-founded Cybercampus Sweden (cybercampus.se) and leads its scientific activities as the Research Director. Additionally, he envisioned and founded the RISE Cyber Range and the Swedish Cybersecurity Research and Innovation Node (cybernode.se). Shahid is an expert cybersecurity researcher; his scientific work, published in prestigious journals and conferences, has received over 8000 citations. He holds a Swedish Docentship title from Uppsala University, a PhD from Mälardalen University, and an MSc degree from KTH, all in cybersecurity.
