Roundtable: Securing Transportation for the Quantum Era

· 10:45 – 12:30 Amsterdam time · Room F (6&7)

Aircraft, rolling stock, vehicles, and vessels stay in service for decades, so the cryptography designed into them today must hold well into the quantum era. Transportation systems also depend on long and complex supply chains: tier-one suppliers, chip vendors, onboard and backend PKI, charging and ground infrastructure, and standards set by many different bodies. Industry and regulators are now beginning to set expectations for the post-quantum transition. The open question is how to plan migrations for systems that cannot simply be patched.

This roundtable brings together people from aviation, rail, automotive, mobility, shipping, and EV charging for a working discussion rather than a series of presentations. After a short introduction from the moderator, participants will compare where their organizations are starting in practice: cryptographic inventory across fleets and onboard systems, in-vehicle and onboard PKI, V2X and charging infrastructure, over-the-air and software updates, and the long-lived assets that will outlive today's algorithms.

The discussion will give particular attention to the dependencies no single operator or manufacturer can resolve alone, from suppliers and chip vendors to certification and the timing of standards, and to what the sector needs from regulators to keep migration aligned across borders.

The main conclusions will feed into a brief recap during the conference's closing session.

Speakers

  • Product Cybersecurity Strategy and Governance · Bosch

Nina Kattwinkel is a Senior Expert for Product Cybersecurity Strategy and Governance at Robert Bosch GmbH, Bosch Mobility. In a career spanning more than 20 years, her work has evolved from embedded systems development through security engineering and management to strategy and governance.

As a security manager, she handled key management, secure boot and secure update, and with them the questions that post-quantum cryptography now raises again: deploying cryptography in ECUs and renewing it in vehicles already in the field, with limited patch options.

Today she addresses these questions strategically, including beyond automotive. For her, technical feasibility is only the starting point: together with engineering experts, she makes visible what each option means for sourcing, the business case and long-term maintenance. From a tier-one perspective, she is keen to explore how architecture and collaboration across the supply chain could enable crypto agility and encapsulated security that can be updated independently, without the need to retest the product's safety and functionality.

Peer Eichler is an IT Solution Architect at Deutsche Bahn Fernverkehr with more than 10 years of experience spanning automotive, autonomous driving and railway IT/OT systems. His work has evolved from systems engineering and product development to system architecture and the design of complex IT landscapes, with a focus on integrating technology across operational and enterprise environments.

Throughout his career, he has worked at the intersection of architecture, cybersecurity and long-lived transportation systems. From embedded and connected systems to railway infrastructure and OT environments, the challenge is not simply to replace cryptographic algorithms, but to make security adaptable throughout the system lifecycle. The key question is how operators can move from theoretical quantum threats to practical, economically viable migration strategies.

As moderator of this roundtable, he aims to bring together perspectives from operators, technology providers and industry experts to explore how architecture, standards and collaboration can enable a quantum-resilient transportation ecosystem.
