Hash based Signatures - A decision support

· 14:30 – 15:00 Amsterdam time · Room E (10)

When it comes to the selection of a PQC signing algorithm the family of hash based signatures pose a valid and highly interesting choice. All of its family members like SLH-DSA, LMS, XMSS provide a very conservative and mature model of security and cover a brought span of parametric options. Hence, they seem to be a natural choice in practice, especially when NIST announced new parameter sets for SLH-DSA (NIST SP800-230). However, due to their extreme diverse parametric options they are discussed most controversial: from super efficient on certain operations vs. challenging on others, super mature in design vs. challenging in handling the state. In numerous projects we gained a large set of experiences how to select the optimal signing algorithm and what are the practical implications. In this talk we want to share our experiences. We give an overview over the different advantages and challenges and provide a decision workflow to select the optimal signing algorithm for dedicated classes of use cases.

Speakers

Volker Krummel is the Chapter Lead PQC at Utimaco, a leading provider of cyber security solutions. Before joining Utimaco Volker worked with governmental institutions and in the financial industry designing cryptographic protocols and solutions for roughly 15 years. Volker holds a PhD in cryptography and is still active in the research of certain topics of cryptography.
