Beyond the Handshake: Enhancing PKI with Out-of-Band Key Agreement

· 14:00 – 14:25 Amsterdam time · Blue hall

Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration is accelerating, but it also exposes a deeper reality: cryptography can no longer be treated as a one-time design choice embedded in protocols. As standards evolve, organizations must prepare for a future where multiple cryptographic assumptions coexist and continuously change, while advances in automation and AI shrink the window to respond to emerging cryptographic risks.

This talk introduces Out-of-Band (OOB) Key Agreement as a practical way to enhance PKI, establishing an independent cryptographic control layer that complements existing protocols such as TLS and IPsec. Rather than replacing in-band key exchange, OOB mechanisms derive additional authenticated symmetric keys through a separate, policy-governed channel rooted in PKI identity, enabling organizations to introduce new cryptographic methods, rotate algorithms, and respond to emerging threats without requiring changes to application or transport layers.

In this model, PKI evolves from a foundational trust anchor into a central orchestrator of cryptographic policy and lifecycle management across multiple key establishment channels, enabling both resilience through diversity and operational simplicity in a post-quantum world.
